Abstract

1376747 Electrical monitoring systems MOLINS Ltd 8 Feb 1972 [11 Feb 1971] 4495/71 Heading G1N The mass per unit length of a rod of material, e.g. a rod of tobacco in a cigarette making machine, is monitored by passing the rod through a waveguide section between a micro-wave source and a detector, the waveguide section being of such narrow cross-section that the radiation is propagated therethrough in the evanescent mode. As shown, two similar waveguides 4, 5, each having apertures 13, 14 therethrough, are provided, the radiation through each being provided from a single source I via a directional coupler 2. Tobacco passes through one only of these apertures. Two detectors 6, 7, each having diodes 8, 9, are provided, their outputs being applied to respective amplifiers 10, 11. The source preferably includes means for modulating the micro-wave output, thereby allowing the amplifiers 10, 11 to be A.C. amplifiers. Diodes or other detectors may be provided at the amplifier outputs to provide D.C. voltages which are subtracted at 16 to provide a single signal representing the density. Since tobacco normally contains moisture which affects the results obtained by the device described above, in the device shown in Fig. 2 there is provided a further waveguide 123 having a separate micro-wave source 121, of different frequency to the source 101, connected to a "magic- T" junction 122, and intersecting the waveguides 104, 105 at the apertures. Two detectors 124, 125 are provided, their outputs being applied to respective amplifiers 126, 127. Amplifiers 110, 111, 126, 127 are connected to respective filters 112, 113, 128, 129, the outputs of 110, 111 being compared at 114 and of 128, 129 at 130. The two equations, having as unknowns the volume of water and the volume of tobacco, are solved in a device 131.
