Abstract

1376676 Manufacturing fibrous webs; treating fibres W H W SCHULLER 3 March 1972 [5 March 1971] 10130/72 Headings D1F and D2A A fibrous web is formed by depositing an aqueous suspension of glass fibres on an endless permeable belt, the fibres being fed to a suspension mixing tank 11 in the form of units 9 of parallel, adhering fibres and which are made by winding extruded glass fibres 1 onto a rotating drum 3 sprayed at 4 with a liquid, until a layer of predetermined thickness is formed then cutting the layer to provide packets 7 of parallel, adhering fibres which are cut by a chopper 8 into the units 9 for delivery to the tank 11 by a conveyor 10. The liquid which is sprayed at 4 is preferably water or is soluble in water but may be liquids normally used as finishes or lubricants, and it acts to ensure cohesion of the fibres to each other and moistens the fibres to facilitate the cutting without substantial fibre separation or dust. The suspension is pumped from the tank 11 to another tank 16 and from there to a tank 18 supplying the endless permeable belt. A device 14 breaks up fibre bundles to ensure good dispersion. The water drained through the permeable belt is filtered and passes to a container 21 from which it is recirculated to the tank 11. The suspension may be continuously circulated from the tank 11 through the tanks 16 and 18 back to the tank 11 to ensure good fibre dispersion. Further tanks 11 and 16 may be provided. A wetting agent may be added to the suspension, e.g. by incorporating it in the liquid sprayed on the drum.
