Abstract

1376625 Rail vehicle compressed air braking systems; valve arrangements DAVIES & METCALFE Ltd 24 Oct 1972 [26 Oct 1971] 49644/71 Heading F2F An air brake distributer 2 for railway locomotives and rolling stock is connected by a pipe 6 to a brake cylinder 8 and incorporates a twostage air exhaust choke 30 for controlling the rate at which the brake cylinder air pressure drops upon brake release via a passage 28: the choke 30 comprises a chamber 32 with outlets 34, 36 to atmosphere and a first choke stage 38 in the passage 28 and a second choke stage 40 with a smaller orifice than stage 38 and urged against a projection 28a by a spring 42. The pipe 6 is connected to a passage 4 in the distributer 2 which leads to chambers 10, 12, 14, 16 containing diaphragms 18, 20, 22, 24. Diaphragm 18 acts on a spindle 26 of a sealing valve which is opened by air pressure in cylinder 8 to connect at least one reservoir to a brake pipe when air pressure in chamber 10 falls below a predetermined level (say 1À5-2À5 p.s.i.g.). A hollow spindle 24A of a main valve communicates the chamber 14 connected to passage 28 During brake release air initially flows to atmosphere mainly via stage 38 and outlet 34 but also via passage 36, and stage 40 is held away from projection 28a by air pressure in passage 28: when this air pressure drops below a predetermined level (say 5 p.s.i.g.) stage 40 abuts projection 28a and venting is wholly via passage 36. The time taken to drop to the first mentioned predetermined pressure at which the sealing valve opens is thereby increased. The orifices in the first and second stages are preferably coaxial.
