Abstract

1376330 Tubular heat exchangers; steam generators BRITISH NUCLEAR DESIGN & CONSTRUCTION Ltd 29 Dec 1972 [29 Dec 1971] 60616/71 Headings F4S and F4A Heat exchange between primary sodium acting as coolant in a reactor core and secondary sodium acting as a source of heat for a steam generator is effected in a heat exchanger 16 comprising an array of helical tubes 23 disposed around a central pipe 19 within a cylindrical casing 17. The tubes extend between a central tube plate 20 disposed within the pipe 19 and tube plates 22 disposed within outer pipes 21 symmetrically located about the central pipe 19; vertical tube portions connect the ends of the helical tube portions to the tube plates. In use primary sodium from "hot" pool 14 enters the heat exchanger 16 via inlet duct 24, passes over the tubes 23, and is thereafter discharged via outlets 25 into the "cold" pool 13 in which the heat exchanger is located. Secondary sodium entering via inlet duct 26 passes through the tubes 23 and then leaves via outlet ducts 27. A structure 32 floating on the primary sodium within the casing 17 provides thermal insulation between the hot and cold secondary sodium in the pipes 19 and 21. The structure comprises an apertured bottom plate 33, a peripheral outer wall 34, and central and peripheral vertical tubes 35 and 36 surrounding the pipes 19 and 21. Removable plugs 28, 29 closing the upper ends of the pipes 19 and 21 permit faulty tubes to be plugged without disassembly of the heat exchanger. The coils of the helical tubes are supported by hangers suspended from brackets which extend outwardly from the pipe 19, the upper and lowermost turns being left unsupported to accommodate differential thermal expansion. A ring 30 having radial struts 31 provides support for the pipes 21. A separate set of cooling coils 38 with inlet and outlet ducts 39 and 40 is provided to prevent overheating of the heat exchanger 16 at times when the flow of secondary sodium through the tubes 23 has been stopped and the reactor has been shut down.
