1376204 Dentures S SCHNEIDER and H S KATZ 21 March 1972 [22 March 1971] 13101/ 72 Heading A5R An artificial denture former is made by applying pressure in the mouth of the patient through a flexible spacer 44 to a layer of impression material 43 carried in an impression tray 20 to form an impression of the patients gum therein, the tray 20 being approximately contoured to the external configuration of a gum of the patient and containing a set of false teeth 42 in a trough therein, the spacer 44 being removed after taking the impression. The teeth 42 may be individual teeth or a plurality of teeth-sections or may be cast as a unit in the tray. Prior to the insertion of the impression material, the inner surfaces of the tray, except the bases of the teeth and tray surfaces therebetween, may be coated with adhesive. After removing the spacer, the impression material on the bases of the teeth is cut away. Alternatively, the teeth-bases may have a cover placed over them prior to insertion of the impression material, the cover and impression material thereover being removed after taking the impression. The former is then used to make a denture by placing denture-forming material in the former and taking an impression in the mouth for a long enough period for the denture material to set, the former comprising the tray 20 and impression material 43 then being removed to leave the teeth attached to the denture plate to form the denture. The impression material 43 may be alginate gel, and the tray 20 may be formed from an ethylene or propylene polymer or copolymer. The spacer 44, which determines the thickness of the denture-forming material in the final denture may be of thin flexible plastics material and may be of uniform thickness, or of varying thickness if a denture plate of non-uniform thickness is required. The denture-plate may be formed from a pigmented acrylic polymer, or an acrylic copolymer containing vinyls or styrene can be used, and may include a catalyst to promote rapid hardening. The denture plate may be of "rigid" material or "semi-hard" material or the denture may be formed with a plate having a "rigid" material outer surface and a "semihard" material inner surface by placing a shim, coated on one side with "rigid" material and on the other with "semi-hard" material, in the denture former prior to taking the plateforming impression as described and claimed in Specification 1346453.
