Abstract

1347791 Coated prosthetic device TECNA CORP 22 Sept 1971 [1 Oct 1970] 44166/71 Heading B2E [Also in Divisions A5R and B5A] A prosthetic device having a surface compatible with blood and living tissue and adapted to receive ingrowth of living cells from an interfacing region of tissue or blood is produced by incorporating microcavities in the surface by embedding particles, granules or fibres into the material forming the surface to a depth of 0.002-0.020 inches, while the surface is soft, thereafter removing the particles, granules or fibres leaving a surface containing cavities having a shape and size corresponding to. the embedded portion of the particles, the granules and fibres. As shown in Fig. 1, a layer 12, e.g. of silicon rubber, heat-curing polyurethane or solvent-evaporation polyurethane is applied to the surface of a prosthetic device. Fibres are flocked on to the tacky surface 12, layer 12 thereafter hardened by solvent evaporation or irradiation heating, and the fibres thereafter dissolved out of layer 12 by a solvent. The substrate may be a metal or metal alloy such as stainless steel, aluminium, ferrous-nickel, titanium, polyproylene, polyethylene terephthalate, nylon, polycarbonate, silicon rubber, polyurethane or natural rubber. The fibres may be nylon, polyethylene terephthalate or acetate. In another embodiment microcavities are formed by using sodium chloride crystals as the particulate material which are subsequently dissolved with distilled water. As shown in Fig. 4 a mould 26 is provided with a polymer adhesive layer 27 which in its soft condition is flocked with flocking material 28. Layer 27 is thereafter set or hardened and surface layer 29 is applied over the surface. The resulting moulded object 29 is then removed from the mould along with layer 27 and the embedded particles 28 which are then dissolved leaving a plurality of internal microcavities 31. Applications mentioned are external coatings for percutaneous lead devices such as tubes, shunts, tannulae, insulated wire and other tubular or mass, energy and information transport devices which provide an external connection to a point beneath the skin.
