Abstract

1346609 Controlled release medicaments DAIICHI SEIYAKU CO Ltd 2 July 1971 [3 July 1970] 31189/71 Heading A5B A tablet from which active material is released periodically comprises at least two layers b and d comprising a medicament and separated by an inert layer or layers c which disintegrate(s) in vivo and is/are unaffected in this respect by variation in pH. The layers are contained within an outer shell e which leaves exposed one surface of one of the medicament layers. This shell is made of a material which resists disintegration in vivo, at least until the or the last inert layer has disintegrated, so that medicament is not released from succeeding layers until some time subsequent to depletion of the layer(s) first subjected to body fluids. The layered structure may be made by conventional compression techniques and the shell, which may be made of synthetic plastics, e.g. PVC, polyethylene or polypropylene, a wax or a cellulose derivative, may be preformed and heat-shrunk on to the core, applied by dip coating or by compression coating. A protective but disintegrable layer a may be applied to the exposed medicament layer surface.
