Abstract
1376149 Conducting-liquid switches MITSUBISHI DENKI KK 15 Dec 1971 [16 Dec 1970] 58346/71 Heading H1N A self-recovering current limiter comprises an outer tube having an internal flange 3a adjacent each end, an inner tube including electrodes 1, 4 separated by an insulating tube 2, the inner tube having external flanges 1a, 4a whose outer diameter is larger than the inner diameter of flanges 3a, insulating material 5 packed between the inner and outer tubes, and a self-recovering current limiting material 2a providing a conductive path between electrodes 1, 4. Current limiting material 2a is sodium, potassium or mixtures of sodium and potassium. When the current reaches a predetermined level, material 2a evaporates, and after a specific period material 2a liquifies again. Electrodes 1, 4 are of copper or a copper alloy, tube 2 is of material such as beryllia porcelain or alumina porcelain, insulating material 5 is a glassy mica composition and the outer tube is of a non-magnetic metallic material such as stainless steel or a high tensile brass. A buffer 7, 0-ring 7a and a spring 8 allow for the expansion of material 2a which is inserted through a needle valve 6. In a second embodiment, Figs. 5, 6 (not shown), the flanges are formed by snap rings. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 1,214,711.
