Abstract
1375685 Thermisters SHIBAURA ELECTRONICS CO Ltd 30 April 1973 [2 May 1972] 20443/73 Heading H1K A body of sintered thermistor material is provided with layers of heat resistant electrode material which are attached by further such material to lead wires which extend out of and are sealed to an encapsulating mass of glass. Typically a mixture of oxides of manganese, nickel and cobalt is pulverized, and press moulded to form a large disc 1 mm. thick. After sintering at over 1000‹ C. its faces are lapped to reduce its thickness to ¢ mm. and then coated with a glass composition containing particulate gold or gold and platinum, which is then fired at 900-1000‹ C. The disc is later subdivided by ultrasonic cutting into 1 mm. dia. pellets the best of which are selected, DUMET or platinum wires attached and the resulting assembly disposed in a soda glass tube. Subsequent heating at 800‹ C. in a tunnel kiln seals the pellet in the glass and strengthens the bond between the wires and the pellet. Alternatively the pellets may be moulded and sintered individually, in which case the steps of firing the electrodes and attachment of wires may be combined in a single operation, which may precede or be combined with the step of encapsulation. An alternative to using a glass tube is to coat the pellet with glass powder.
