1467735 Detecting gases electrically FORD MOTOR CO Ltd 28 Aug 1974 [31 Aug 1973] 37554/74 Heading G1N A transition metal oxide semi-conductor gas sensor of the type described in Specification 1376769 and used to determine the air/fuel ratio of an I.C. engine is made so as to withstand the testing environment and yet maintain a sufficient sensitivity. Very pure, at least 99À5% Titania powder is calcined and ball milled so as to change the majority into the high temperature stable phase and produce a fine powder, the maximum dimension of each particle being less than 20Á and the particle size range being narrow, 90% of the powder being less than 10Á and 75% being less than 5Á. After ball milling with an organic binder solution to form a slurry the latter is cast in the form of a tape and two such tapes are laminated from which ceramic discs are punched. Platinum heater wires are then applied to one surface of a disc and a second disc placed on top to form a heater pellet. The spaced electrodes and a thermocouple are placed on a heater pellet and superposed by a further heater pellet or ceramic disc after which the assembly is sintered. The particle size and distribution is such that the completed assembly has a density of 72% to 85% of the theoretical density and the average open pore diameter is between 0À4Á to 0À7Á with a total open pore volume of 0À04 to 0À1 cc/gm. This leads to a sensor which has a satisfactory response time and does not crack or fracture in use.
