Abstract

1375426 Thermal switches CORNING GLASS WORKS 23 Aug 1972 [26 Aug 1971] 39197/72 Heading H1N A high temperature thermostat comprises a metal wire 12 inside a glass or glass-ceramic tube 11, wire 12 having a higher thermal coefficient of linear expansion than tube 11 and being attached to one end 11a of tube 11 and being coupled adjacent the other end with resilient means 16, 19 biased to maintain wire 12 under tension and having normally closed contacts 16b, 19b which open at or above a preselected temperature. Expansion of wire 12 causes contact spring blades 16, 19 to move to the right until the bent end of blade 16 engages adjustable stop 22 when blade 19 continues to move to the right breaking contact. In a second embodiment, Fig. 3 (not shown), the metal wire 32 is kept under tension by an arm 36 of a snap switch 35 (unspecified), and expansion of wire 32 operates switch 35.
