Abstract

1375333 Retractive switches; actuating devices for switches PHILIPS ELECTRONIC & ASSOCIATED INDUSTRIES Ltd 1 March 1973 [4 March 1972] 9966/73 Heading H1N A control member for a switch comprises a portion 5 of elastic compressible material carrying a pressure member 17 and connected to a portion 3 of comparatively rigid elastic compressible material by a compressible coupling 7 having a comparatively rigid portion 9 and comparatively flexible portions 11, 13, with a pressure edge 23 connected to portion 5 and which compresses portion 9 of coupling 7 during the contact making movement. The member is used in a switch comprising a substrate 25 having printed circuit contacts 27 and insulating layer 29 with an opening 31 and a flexible contact strip 33 covered by a flexible insulating foil 35, the control member being secured by adhesive to foil 35 and depression of pushbutton 19 forcing coupling 7 to reverse its curvature so that pressure member 17 depresses contact strip 33 into engagement with contact 27. Coupling 7 reversing provides a positive "feel" to the operator. A number of switches on the same substrate may form a keyboard, Fig. 4 (not shown).
