Abstract

1375006 Beneficiation of ores NILUX HOLDING SA 10 Dec 1971 [11 Dec 1970 8 April 1971] 57454/71 Heading C1A [Also in Division C7] In a method of beneficiating an oxide ore or ore concentrate of nickel, copper or cobalt by the segregation process, comprising mixing the oxide ore or ore concentrate with a halide salt and a suitable reductant while at an elevated temperature, an improvement is provided which comprises adding ferrous or ferric oxide to the ore or ore concentrate to increase the active iron content thereof. The active iron oxide content can be increased by adding ferrous or ferric oxide per se or by adding an ore containing ferrous or ferric oxide. In the examples a reactor is used comprising a silica tube 10, with a stopper 14 and thermocouple 18, heated by the furnace 16 and vibrated by the vibrostirrer 20. Ore is added to the heated reactor and the mixture roasted with the stopper left off. Pre-mixed calcium chloride/coke reagent is then added, the stopper is applied, and the charge is heated and vibrated to effect the reaction. On cooling the mixture is wet ground and magnetic segregation of the nickel-iron alloy produced is carried out. The process is applied to gamierite-type ore, nickeliferous laterite, asbestos tailings containing nickel, rougher concentrate and Tenke Fungurume ore and the effect of added Fe 2 O 3 and of various halides, is determined.
