1374363 2,2 - Dimethyl - 3 - (2<SP>1</SP> - oxocyclopentylidenemethyl) - cyclopropane carboxylates ROUSSEL UCLAF 8 June 1972 [8 June 1971] 26832/72 Heading C2C [Also in Division A5] The invention comprises racemic or optically active compounds of Formula I in which R represents H; alkali metal; an optionally substituted C 1 -C 6 alkyl group; a benzyl radical optionally substituted by one or more alkyl, alkenyl, alkadienyl, methylenedioxy or benzyl groups or a halogen atom; a tetrahydrophthalimidomethyl radical optionally substituted on the cyclohexene nucleus by one or more halogen atoms, methyl groups or acetoxy groups; a radical of Formula Ia in which Y 1 and Y 2 are independently H, alkyl, alkenyl, or alkadienyl groups and Y 3 is H or an optionally substituted alkyl, alkenyl, alkadienyl, alkynyl, aryl or heterocyclic radical; or a 1-ono-3-methyl-2-cyclopenten-4-yl residue of Formula Ib in which Z is an alkyl, alkenyl, alkadienyl, alkynyl, aryl, aralkyl, cycloalkyl, cycloalkenyl or heterocyclic radical. Compounds claimed per se, and exemplified are the isomers of 2,2-dimethyl-(2<SP>1</SP>-oxo(E)- cyclopentylidenemethyl) - cyclopropane carboxylic acid and its potassium salt, 5-benzyl-3- furylmethyl - 2,2 - dimethyl - (2<SP>1 </SP>- oxo(E)- cyclopentylidenemethyl) - cyclopropane carboxylate and dl - allethrolene - 2,2 - dimethyl- (2<SP>1</SP> - ono(E)cyclopentylidene methyl)-cyclopropane carboxylate. The compounds may be prepared by reacting a compound of the Formula II wherein R is as defined above other than an alkali metal, or an internal acylal thereof, with a compound of general Formula III where Ar represents an aryl radical to obtain a compound of Formula I in which R=H followed, optionally, by salt formation or esterification.
