Compounds of the formula where R and Z are H, alkyl, aralkyl, aryl, alkenyl, alkynyl, cycloalkyl, cycloalkenyl or a heterocyclic radical (which may be substituted by alkyl or alkoxy of 1-6 carbon atoms) or a cyano, acyl, formyl, alkoxycarbonyl or nitro group, or R 1 and Z together with the carbon atom to which they are attached form a saturated or unsaturated heterocyclic or homocyclic ring - (which may be substituted by alkyl or alkoxy of 1-6 carbon atoms and/or an oxo group) or a polycyclic aromatic residue, the CO 2 H being in the cis configuration relative to the group, are prepared by reacting under basic conditions a compound of the formula with a compound which under basic conditions is able to exist as an ylide of partial general formula in which R 1 and Z are as defined, or with a compound which under basic conditions exists as a carbanion of partial general formula in which R 1 is as defined and Z is vinyl, phenyl, cyano, acyl, formyl, alkoxycarbonyl or nitro. The compounds produced can be converted into salts. The invention further comprises optically active cis-3,3-dimethyl-2-(2<SP>1</SP>-alkoxycarbonyl - trans - 1<SP>1</SP> - propenyl) - cyclopropane- 1 - carboxylic acids and the cis-(1S,2R)-3,3- dimethyl - 2 - (2<SP>1</SP> - methoxycarbonyl - trans- 1<SP>1</SP> - propenyl) - cyclopropane - 1 - carboxylic acid salt of dextro-rotatory α-phenylethylamine.
