1399088 Cephalosporin compounds GLAXO LABORATORIES Ltd 12 May 1972 [14 May 1971 1 Oct 1971] 20952/72 and 20953/72 Divided out of 1399086 Heading C2C Novel 7 - acylamido - ceph - 3 - em - 4 - carboxylic acids and salts and esters thereof and the corresponding 1-sulphoxides, wherein the 7-acylamido group has the structure in which R is hydrogen or an organic group and R<SP>a</SP> is an etherifying monovalent organic group linked to the oxygen atom through a carbon atom, said compounds being in the anti isomeric form as regards the configuration of the group OR<SP>a</SP> with respect to the carboxamido group, or being a mixture of syn and anti isomers containing at least 75% of the anti isomer, are prepared by acylating a 7-amino or 7-isocyanato ceph-3-em carboxylic acid or its salt or ester, with an acylating agent corresponding to the acid of formula and then recovering the desired 7-acylamido ceph-3-em compound, if necessary after separation of the syn and anti isomers.
