Abstract

1374282 Phthalic anhydride KOPPERS CO Inc 13 Oct 1971 [16 Oct 1970] 47728/71 Heading C2C Phthalic anhydride is obtained by oxidation of naphthalene or ortho-xylene by passing, at elevated temperature and pressure, a mixture of oxygen-containing gas and naphthalene or ortho-xylene through a bed of an appropriate catalyst to fluidize the catalyst, wherein (1) the contact ratio, (i.e. the weight of naphthalene or orthoxylene per weight of catalyst in a reactor at any given moment), of naphthalene or orthoxylene to catalyst is at least 4À0 Î 10<SP>-4</SP>, (2) the ratio of oxygen to naphthalene or orthoxylene is within the range of from 1À4 : 1 to 2À0 : 1 by weight, and (3) the naphthalene or orthoxylene loading is within the range of from 0À08 to 0À50 pounds of naphthalene, or orthoxylene, per hour per pound of fluidized catalyst. The process is suitably effected at a temperature of 320-400‹ C., a pressure of at least 25 p.s.i.g., preferably 38-500 p.s.i.g., and with the use of a catalyst which is, in the case of naphthalene being employed as starting material, vanadium pentoxide supported on silica gel. The oxygencontaining gas may be air, in which case the air to naphthalene or orthoxylene weight ratio should be within the range of from 6À0 : 1 to 8À5 : 1, oxygen-enriched air, and/or recycled tail gas plus air. A suitable form of apparatus for carrying out the process is described in a flow diagram.
