Abstract
1370959 Phthalic anhydride BADISCHE ANILIN- & SODA-FABRIK AG 16 Feb 1972 [20 Feb 1971] 7128/72 Heading C2C Phthalic anhydride is obtained by oxidizing o-xylene or naphthalene with O 2 or a gas containing O 2 in the presence of a globular supported catalyst containing V 2 O 5 and TiO 2 in a tubular reactor wherein the tubes have a length of 4-5 metres and an internal width of 31À5- 40 mm., the globules of supported catalyst have a diameter of 7-9 mm. and the tubes are surrounded by a heat exchange medium which is cooled outside the tubular reactor and is introduced preferably in countercurrent to the starting materials, at 370-390‹ C., the gaseous starting mixture being precompressed to from 1 to 3 atmospheres gauge prior to the reaction. The example describes the oxidation of oxylene with air.
