Abstract

Carboxylic acids and/or anhydrides are obtd. by the catalytic oxidn. of hydrocarbons by passing the latter into the catalyst by means of a carrier gas contg. 5-20 vol. % of O2 and 80-95 vol. % of an inert gaseous medium of which at least half is N2. The carrier gas is pref. 5-20 vol. % of O2, 55-95 vol. % N2, 0-25 vol. % CO2 and 0-25 vol. % water vapour e.g. 8-14% O2, 71-88% N2 and 4-15% CO2. Partic useful for oxidn. of ortho-xylene to phthalic anhydride using a charge of 5-90 g of xylene per normal m3 of carrier gas.
