Abstract

Phthalic anhydride is produced by a process in which ortho-xylene and/or naphthalene and a gas containing molecular oxygen are passed into a primary reaction zone containing a catalyst wherein the precursor is oxidized, the effluent being withdrawn, mixed with additional precursor and passed into a secondary reaction zone at a temperature at least 10 DEG F. higher than the primary reaction zone containing a catalyst wherein further precursor is oxidized, the second reactor effluent being withdrawn and condensed to give phthalic anhydride. The catalyst may be an oxide of vanadium, molybdenum, tungsten, manganese or calcium or mixtures thereof which may be coated or impregnated on a support material such as silicon carbide, silica gel and alumina. The oxygen containing gas may be air. The first reaction zone is suitably at 740-850 DEG F., the second at 780-900 DEG F.
