Abstract

1373897 Phosphatizing steel PYRENE CHEMICAL SERVICES Ltd 21 March 1973 [22 March 1972] 13618/73 Heading C7U Steel surfaces are phosphatized by contact with an aqueous bath containing 1-35 g/l Mn, 0-30 g/l Fe II, 5-80 g/l P 2 O 5 , and 0-80 g/l NO 3 , having a point number from 15-150 and the following weight ratios of constituents: Fell: Mn = 0-10 : 1, Mn : P 2 O 5 = 0À02-2À5 : 1, NO 3 : P 2 O 5 = 0-3 : 1, and free P 2 O 5 : total P 2 O 5 = 0À05-0À45 : 1, the bath being replenished during use with a replenishment containing Mn : P 2 O 5 : NO 3 in a ratio 0À05-0À6 : 1 : 0-1 and having a ratio free P 2 O 5 : total P 2 O 5 of 0À5-1 : 1, the NO 3 in both bath and replenishment being wholly or partly replaceable by Cl or/and SO 4 , in the proportion 0À57 parts Cl or 0À77 parts SO 4 for 1 part of NO 3 . The initial bath may also contain Ni or Co, simple or complex fluorides, chlorate, peroxide, bromate or nitrite, and the replenishment may contain Ni, Co, alkali, Ca or NH4 cations or simple or complex fluorides. A workpiece is cleaned by degreasing in organic solvent, acid, neutral, or alkaline cleaning, sandsteel grain- or corundum-blasting, alkali- or acidpickling, optionally pre-treated in an aqueous suspension of manganese phosphate which may contain Na 4 P 2 O 7 or Na 5 P 3 O 10 , and is then dipped at T>60‹C in the bath for 1-30 minutes; the P 2 O 5 in the replenishment may be provided by polyphosphoric acid or salt instead of orthophosphate.
