Abstract

1373693 Wurtzite-like boron nitride FILIAL ORDENA LENINA INSTITUTA KHIMICHESKOI 26 April 1972 [19 July 1971] 19260/72 Heading C1A Imperfect wurtzite-like boron nitride having a crystal unit cell wherein a0 = 2À55Š and c0 = 4À20Š at 25‹ C., a pycometric density of from 3À10 g./cm.<3> to 3À38 g./cm.<3>, a transition temperature into graphite-like boron nitride of 700‹ C., a specific surface area of not less than 10 m.<2>/g. and a refractive index less than 2À10 for red light of specific wave length 6620Š. The product may be made by subjecting a mixture of powdered graphite-like boron nitride and an additive other than an elemental metal having a shock impedance different from, and a residual temperature lower than that of the BN to be formed to a shock wave. The pressure of the shock wave may be not less than 100 K Bar and may be produced by an explosion in a protective device. The additive may be water or an aqueous solution (1-5%), of an alkaline reagent such as NaOH, KOH or Na2CO3.
