Abstract

1351448 Recovering copper IMI REFINERY (HOLDINGS) Ltd 11 Aug 1971 [28 Aug 1970] 41607/70 Heading C7D Copper is recovered from composite articles of the metal and insulation material by immersing the article in a bath of alkali metal hydroxide at a temperature at which the insulation softens, disintegrates or decomposes, allowing the insulation to separate from the copper and withdrawing the copper from the bath. The method is particularly applicable to cable formed of copper clad with polyvinyl chloride which is placed in a steel wire-mesh basket submerged in the bath and after agitation, the basket is removed. The alkali metal hydroxide may be NaOH or KOH in molten form or in aqueous solution; when used in aqueous solution, the concentration of the solution must be such that its boiling point is above the softening, disintegration, or decomposition temperature of the insulation. Other organic materials e.g. paper, fabric wrappings or coatings, shellac, or mixed inorganic/organic materials, e.g. patina or marine deposits, may also be removed.
