Abstract

137,318. Newman, W. T. Nov. 10, 1915, [Convention date]. Spring wheels with continuous outer rigid ring and pneumatic cushions.-Relates to resilient wheels of the type in which relative movement between a hollow metallic rim and the hub is controlled by cylinders or pistons replacing the spokes. The rim 12 comprises a tube of drawn steel &c. forming an air reservoir and communicating through passages 13 with telescopic spokes. E a c h spoke comprises a piston 21 and cylinder 17. The cylinder 17 is screwed into a tubular nut attached to the hub, and is secured by a flanged nut 19 and collar 18, packing 34 preventing the egress of air. The piston member is similarly secured to the rim and slides through a collar 25 supporting packing-rings 26. The piston carries collars 29, 30, with interposed packing 31. A spring 33 cushions the pistons in the event of leakage of air. Alternate spokes are dished outwardly, as shown, to allow slight lateral resilience.
