Abstract

1372860 Continuous casting SOC CIVILE D'ETUDES DE CENTRIFUGATION 22 Dec 1971 [24 Dec 1970] 59543/71 Heading B3F Liquefied gas 9 such as nitrogen or argon is passed into a mould 1 adjacent the surface of the molten metal, e.g. steel, with which it does not - react to change the degree of oxidation of the metal and which rotates about a vertical axis while the continuous casting is withdrawn downwardly. The liquid 9 is said to reduce the required quantity of lubricating oil, e.g. rape oil 11, and to reduce the amount of slag and other impurities brought to the surface. The mould 1 (together with a mandrel, if a hollow casting is to be produced) and withdrawal rollers 5 may be rotated about a vertical axis, or the molten metal alone may be rotated by the impact of the jet 7 of molten metal fed into the mould or by a rotating magnetic field induced in the molten metal.
