Abstract
1371965 Photo-electric curve followers; recording apparatus W H COULTER 23 June 1972 [26 July 1971] 29505/72 Headings G1A and G1J [Also in Division G4] A curve-tracing arrangement providing arbitrary transformation of an input variable applied at a terminal 5 comprises a recorder 4 having a tracing member 3 movable in response to signals in a control loop 2, the corresponding input variable being fed to a further control loop 1, the two loops being coupled by a scale transformation device which includes a movable member 10 bearing a transformation curve 11a and a curve follower 12. The curve 11a may, for example, represent a log or a probability function whereby the variable is recorded according to a corresponding scale on the recorder 4. The latter is in the form of a table moved by rack-and-pinion 22, 26 in a direction orthogonal to the movement of the tracing member 3. A current representing a second input variable is fed to the motor 27 which actuates the pinion. The control loop 2 comprises the curve follower 12 (as input), a motor 15 and a control circuit 17 between the follower and the motor. The motor drives a continuous belt 14 which actuates the follower 12 and the tracing member 3 in unison. The control loop 1 comprises a circuit 6 for controlling the actuating motor 7 of the transformation device 11 in accordance with the input variable applied at terminal 5. The motor also drives a potentiometer 9 which is included in the input stage of the control circuit 6. The device 11 may be a (replaceable) cylinder 10 bearing a black line 11a representing the transformation function and the curve-follower 12 may consist of a pair of photo-detectors 43, 44, Fig.6, connected to give an output of appropriate sign whenever the line 11a moves from a central position between the detectors. As shown, light from a source 40 is reflected from the surface of the cylinder 10 and transmitted to the photo-detectors 43, 44 by prisms 45, 46 arranged on either side of the line 11a with their apical edges aligned. The detectors are arranged in a bridge circuit Fig.8 (not shown) the output of which is detected by a differential amplifier and fed via a limiter to one or other of a pair of thyristors, according to sign. The thyristors drive the motor 16 in a direction tending to correct misalignment of the prisms, whereby they follow the curve 11a as the cylinder rotates. Control circuit 6 is similar to control circuit 17 and includes a differential amplifier for detecting the difference between the input signal at terminal 15 and the output of a potentiometer 9 driven by the shaft of cylinder 10. The difference signal is used to drive motor 7 which therefore follows the input signal. The bridges in both control circuits include balance-adjusting potentiometers. The light source 40 shares a common current source with the detectors. In a modification Fig.7 (not shown), two pyramidal prisms with apices on either side of line 11a are used.
