1392223 Level-luffing jib cranes HILGERS AG 10 April 1972 [8 April 1971] 16371/72 Heading B8B [Also in Division G3] A device for obtaining a horizontal load movement in a luffing jib crane comprises a cam disc 4 moved by a cord 17 from the luffing mechanism and coupled by a shaft 18 to a potentiometer 19. A circular disc 7 is similarly actuated by a cord 20 connected to the lifting mechanism and is coupled by a shaft 24 to a potentiometer 22. The potentiometers 19, 22 are connected in a bridge circuit. As long as the lifting and luffing mechanisms operate at the correct speed ratio relative to one another, the bridge circuit is in balance. If this balance is disturbed a control signal is produced at the output of the bridge circuit, which is used to control the lifting winch so as to obtain horizontal load movement. In a modification (not shown), the cam 4 is circular, the resistance of one or both potentiometers 19, 22 providing the necessary information. In a further embodiment, Figs. 2A, 2B (not shown) a control disc (7) has two conductive areas separated by a neutral, insulating gap. The disc (7) is rotated by the luffing mechanism via a cam (4) while a pointer (12) is rotated by the lifting mechanism. As long as the pointer (12) is in the gap no signal is produced, but should the pointer (12) leave the gap it encounters positive or negative voltage producing a control signal for the lifting winch. The cam 4 may be designed to rotate several times and may compensate for the resilient deformations of the crane for a medium load. A suitable set of cam discs may be provided for the lengths of jib provided.
