Abstract
137,188. Joly, J., and Vernaz, A. March 22, 1919. Chucks.-In a tool-holding chuck of the type which has radially movable Jaws bearing against a conical sleeve and operated by a screw spindle having a follower engaging the jaws and separated from the spindle by a ball bearing, the follower is attached to the spindle by a centrallyplaced screw-threaded bolt. In the form shown in Fig. 1, the jaws a are mounted in slots d in a sleeve c, which is screwed to the conical sleeve b and has secured thereto a threaded liner f engaging the threaded spindle e. The screw-threads of the spindle and sleeve are trapezoidal to secure good centring in spite of wear. The jaws are connected by springs j to a follower i, which is loosely attached to the spindle e by a screw k, and between which and the spindle a ball bearing h is provided. The springs j keep the jaws in contact with the sleeve b and follower. In the form shown in Fig. 7, the jaws a<2> are T-shaped in cross-section and slide in similarly-shaped slots in the sleeve c<2>, which is screwed to the conical sleeve b<2>. The jaws are provided with tonguepieces a<20> which are situated between a flange k<10> of the follower k<20>, loosely connected to the threaded spindle e'‹ by a screw k<1>, and a ball bearing composed of a set of balls h' between two races i<1>, i<2>, so as to avoid hardening the end of the spindle as in the first form. Specification 9533/95 is referred to.
