Abstract
1371790 Hydrogen fluoride preparation BAYER AG 25 Jan 1972 [26 Jan 1971] 3382/72 Heading C1A HF and a by-product metal sulphate are prepared by (a) pre-heating a solid metal fluoride, e.g. ÀCaF2 or NaSiF6, in a gaseous suspension having a solid/gas conen. of 0À2-4 kg./Nm.<3> to a temp. of 500-800‹ C. and then (b) reacting the pre-heated fluoride with H2SO4 at a temp. of 100-500‹ C. The fluoride may have a ptle. size of 40-250 Á and contain basic additives, e.g. NaOH, KOH, Na2CO3 or K2CO3, in amounts up to 20 mole per cent added before or after the pre-heat treatment to increase the exothermicity of the subsequent acid reaction. The fluoride may be heated in countercurrent by burning carbonaceous materials. The H2SO4 may be added to the fluoride partly as SO3 or oleum either incrementally or in one step preferably outside the reaction furnace. In an embodiment of the process ground CaF2 is fed via 5 into heat exchanger 6 heated by hot combustion gases entering at 7 and exiting at 19, the heated fluoride is then removed from the exchanger at 10 and brought into contact with increments of H2SO4 supplied via 12, prior to being heated with the acid in the rotary furnace 13. Basic additives may be supplied either to the hot fluoride at 17 or to the cold fluoride at 18.
