Abstract
1371185 Vehicle crash recorder GENERAL MOTORS CORP 29 March 1973 [3 May 1972] 15100/73 Heading G4H In a vehicle crash recorder, analogue information signals are periodically sampled and each sample coded into a serial digital word which is stepped through a shift register having a number of stages equal to the number of bits in a given number of words, and after a crash a number of words other than said given number are shifted into and/or through the register whereby at least a portion of the words in the register prior to the crash provides pro-crash information and at least a portion of the words supplied to the register after the crash provides post-crash information. The circuitry is all solid state. As shown, longitudinal acceleration and sideways acceleration signals are obtained at 10 and 12, respectively, and amplified in low-gain amplifiers 16, 22 and high-gain amplifiers 18, 24. The amplified signals are sampled in turn and coded at 40, the "low-gain" signals being clocked into register 42, the "high-gain" into register 44 Speed dependent frequency signals, obtained at 26, are coded by counting and clocked into a register 48. When a crash is detected by level detector 50 no further words are supplied to registers 44 and 48 which retain the pre-crash information already therein. Switch 52 is enabled and as post-crash information is clocked into register 42 the pre-crash information already therein is transferred to a memory 53. This continues until all the pre-crash and a predetermined number of post-crash words have been transferred to the memory 53. Thereafter the contents of registers 44 and 48 are transferred in turn to the memory 53 and the power supply disabled to prevent any further information being monitored. Driver response and brake energization may be monitored. If the shift registers 42, 44, 48 are non-volatile, memory 53 may be omitted.
