Abstract
1371017 Clearing ship's hulls P S McADAM and A T HEWSON 18 June 1973 [22 June 1972] 28899/73 Headings B7A and B7M A vessel 11 carries a brush assembly 39 on an articulated boom 27 and is moved along a ship's hull 48 by thruster units 12 while the brush assembly cleans the hull. The vessel is guided along the hull by spring loaded castor wheels 22. The boom is operated by hydraulic rams 30, 31, 35 acting through compensating springs 33, 34, 37, 38. A diver's seat 44 is located adjacent the brush assembly. The brush assembly has three brushes driven by hydraulic motors 43 and has limited freedom of movement relative to the boom so that it can follow the shape of the ship's hull. The rams, the brush motors and the hydraulic motors 16 of the thruster units 12 are powered by pumps driven by a pair of engines 18. In operation, the boom depends through a central hull opening. When the boom is withdrawn for inboard storage, the hull opening is covered by a grid (46), Fig. 2 (not shown).
