Abstract

1370812 Cleaning and chromating metals OXY METAL FINISHING CORP 14 Dec 1971 [11 Jan 1971] 57981/71 Headings C7E and C7U [Also in Divisions B2 and F2] In an apparatus for coating the internal and external surfaces of a can body 10 the body is guided for longitudinal movement by guide rods 62 and is moved along by jets of coating material from six outlet nozzles 82 and decelerated by the outlet from three coating nozzles 84 located to oppose the motion of the can. Cans 10 having one closed end are fed between the guide rods 62 with their open ends in the trailing position. They are accelerated by jets from nozzles 82 striking the outside surface thereof. Deceleration is produced by jets from nozzles 84 striking the ends of the cans and this continues until the jets from nozzles 82 enter the ends of the cans and the accelerating force overcomes the decelerating force so that the cans leave section T. The jets are fed from a reservoir by a pump through hoses 42, 46 to manifolds 106, 106' each provided with turbulence prevention walls 116, 116'. From section T the cans pass to a section S where they receive a blast of gas from a nozzle 126 which accelerates the cans and removes excess coating material from the outside thereof. In the sections S and T excess material from the coating operation returns via ports 50, 128 to the supply reservoir. Although the apparatus has been described as a coating operation it is of modular construction and the flanged ends 56 of the sections S and T can be joined to other similar sections which instead of coating provide cleaning, rinsing and de-ionizing stages before the cans pass finally to a drying oven. Cleaning materials used include phosphoric or sulphuric acid, carbonates, phosphates, polyphosphates or hydroxides. The coating solution may be a chromate coating solution.
