Abstract
1370684 Ignition systems PHILIPS ELECTRONIC & ASSOCIATED INDUSTRIES Ltd 2 Sept 1971 [5 Sept 1970] 41012/71 Heading F1B An ignition system includes a semi-conductor switch 6 to be connected between a supply source V B and an ignition coil 7 and a central circuit 5 which is connected to a control input from a contact breaker 3 and also to the control electrode of the semi-conductor switch. The control circuit includes a control pulse generator which on reception of a control signal applies to the semiconductor switch a control pulse of a duration which is determined by a resistance - capacitance network so that a given energy is stored in the ignition coil, which energy is released at the instant of the trailing edge of the control pulse to be dissipated in the form of sparks. The control pulse generator includes at least one voltage reference element and the time duration of the control pulse is substantially proportional to RC log VB/VB-VR where RC is the time constant of the resistance capacitance network, V B is the supply voltage and V R is the voltage of the voltage reference element. As shown the control pulse generator includes a transistor 14 and a Zener diode Z and an invertex stage comprising a transistor 16. The switch 6 includes two transistors 10 and 11 comprising a Darlington pair. The control pulse generator may be a Schmitt trigger, a series combination of a resistor and a capacitor being connected as the resistance capacitance network between the supply terminals of the Schmitt trigger. Alternatively the control pulse generator may be a monostable multi-vibrator circuit the switch 6 being a Darlington pair. Other modifications are described.
