Abstract

1370489 Electronic watches SUWA SEIKOSHA KK 15 Dec 1971 [23 Dec 1970] 58271/71 Heading G3T [Also in Division G5] An electronic watch has a numeric time display formed by selective energization of combinations of electrodes suitably shaped to form characters, a plurality of such electrodes being disposed on each of upper and lower panels which are superimposed and spaced apart. A layer of liquid crystal is disposed in between. Fig.3 illustrates the electrode arrangement for forming one digit of the time display. Panel A carries four printed circuit electrodes and four terminals therefore, and overlies a panel B. The latter has two electrodes with two terminals. Liquid crystal is sandwiched between the panels. In practice, where six digit display is required there will be six electrode systems as panel A and six as panel B arranged on respective panels as illustrated Fig. 5 (not shown). Like electrodes on panel A are connected together and to a respective common terminal. Each electrode in panel B is connected to a respective terminal. In the driving arrangement Fig.6 (not shown) known circuitry in block 1 derives from clock signals fed in at i figure representative signals B, C, D which are supplied to a known decoder 2. The decoder converts the signals B, C, D into signals which select the electrodes in the time display device 3 for energization. A known scanning circuit 4 scans the decoded signals B, C, D with a synchronizing signal also supplied from circuit 1 and fed via a lead Si. The electrodes in the display are selected and energized in accordance with the decoded signals and at times determined by the synchronizing signals so that the device 3 displays the time. Only some of the electrodes, which are necessary to form a numeral, may be energized at any one time. Thus, as described with reference to Figs.7 and 8 (not shown) to form a numeral 3 the necessary combinations of overlapping electrode portions are energized at four successive times t 1 to t 4 . By virtue of persistence of vision the successive partial displays are seen to form the numeral 3.
