Abstract

1370468 Spray producers; spray coating apparatus NORDSON CORP 1 Sept 1971 [4 Sept 1970] 40853/71 Headings B2F and B2L In an automatically controlled fluid circuit for changing the colour of paint supplied to a spray gun 10, the solvent valve 32 is preferably only timed to open sufficiently long for the resultant slug of solvent 112 to extend only part of the way round the feed and return circuit 21, 22 between the new colour 115 and the old colour 111: the latter being passed through dump valve 18 to waste. During a second timed period (T2, Fig. 2, not shown) the solvent travels from a point 115 to past the T joint 14, whereupon dump valve 18 is allowed to close. As shown, an airless spray gun is remotely controlled by compressed air entering through pilot port 16 to actuate piston 185 and lift valve head 165 from its seat in insert 159, which may be made of tungsten carbide. As soon as a change of colour is initiated by operating valve (54, Fig. 1, not shown) the colour selector valve (45) is locked. A series of time-delay valves (71, 72 and 73) are then automatically operated in sequence. The time delays are varied by adjusting restrictions (83, 91 and 95) in the supply line to the valve-operating ports, so that the pressure required for actuation is only gradually reached. If the gun is manually controlled, the valve (73), which is solely provided for purging the gun, may be omitted.
