1370467 Safety devices for wick-fed heaters ALADDIN INDUSTRIES Ltd 14 Sept 1971 [15 June 1971] 27945/71 Heading F4T A wick-fed liquid fuel burning heater is provided with an extinguishing device operable in response to tilting of the heater, the device being mounted within the heater body above the wick so as to move vertically between an upper inoperative position, where it is held by a catch, to a lower operative position into which it is urged by a spring when a freely suspended weight has tripped the catch on displacement of the heater from the vertical. In a first embodiment a short drum radiant heater shown in Fig. 1 comprises a cylindrical wick 2 disposed in the annular space between inner and outer wick tubes 3 and 5 and dipping into the well 6 of a non-spill tank such as is described in Specification 1,001,029 and a burner mounted above the wick and comprising coaxial perforated shells 10 and 12, a draught shield 14 and a gauze dome 20. The extinguisher device is in the form of a tube 4 having an upper perforated portion which slides on the wick tube 3 and a wider diameter lower portion which slides on the wick and which is formed with helical slots which engage studs 24 secured to the wick. A rod 27 is secured to the tube 4 A tension spring 27a urges the rod 27 and tube 4 downwardly into the extinguishing position wherein the wick is lowered between the tubes 3 and 5 and a flange 13 on the tube 4 seal off the top of the annular space containing the wick. A catch 34 biased anticlockwise by a spring 38 maintains the device in its upper inoperative position until a freely suspended weight 32 mounted on the rod 27 engages fingers 33 to release the catch, this occurring on displacement of the heater from the vertical. In a second embodiment shown in Fig. 4 a blue flame heater comprises a cylindrical wick disposed round an air tube 44 and under a chimney 45 and a burner galley 48 surrounds the top of the wick. The extinguisher device is a ring of metal 81 mounted on a rod 78 which in turn is pivoted at 77 to the longer arm 71 of a bell crank lever which lever is urged clockwise into the extinguishing position by a spring (not shown) surrounding a pivot 69. A catch 74 secures the device in its upper position until released by a weight 84 on the rod 78.
