The fuel container of a wick burner contains a disc 18 of mineral wool within which the fibres are horizontal. A mass 19 of wood wool providing relatively large pores, and above the mass 19 a filling 20 of a nature the same as the mineral wool disc 18. A fine glass fibre wick 21 conveys the fuel from the disc 18 to the filling 20. A wick 27 serving as a burner is detachably secured to a fixed wick 22. The burner wick 27 is made of glass fibres enclosed in an asbestos sleeve 28 and is mounted in a burner head 24 comprising an inner tube 25 and a perforated outer tube 26. The inner tube 25 fits telescopically in a refilling pipe 13 extending upwardly from the bottom of the fuel container and the outer tube 26 extends telescopically within a supporting tube 11 secured in a central opening in the top of the fuel container. The fixed wick 22 is made of glass or nylon fibres and is surrounded by an asbestos sleeve 23. In order to regulate the flame, a control sleeve 32 is slid over the burner head 24 by means of a crank 37 engaging a slot in a pivoted fork 32 co-operating with lugs 35 on the sleeve 32. The fibres of the fixed wick 22 are finer than the fibres of the disc 18 and filling 20. An air space is formed in the fuel container by a wire gauge 31 wound around the lower end of the support tube 11. A bent metal strip 16 is secured to the bottom end of the refilling pipe 13 and forms a fuel distribution channel. The burner is disposed on the bottom of a cylindrical casing (42) (Fig. 1), and retained therein by four leaf springs (43). The burner head 24 extends through a central hole (46) in a sheetmetal plate (45), supported on lugs (44) inside the casing and is enclosed by a perforated inverted cup (47) serving as a flame distributor, and resting on the sheet metal plate (45). When the control sleeve 32 is raised to its upper end position to extinguish the burner it lifts the flame distributer (47) off the plate (45) to allow unburned gases to escape. Four vanes (49) secured to the plate serve to support a cooking vessel or a grill. A perforated cover (53) for the cylindrical casing is provided.
