A wick-fed oil-burning space heater comprises a wick chamber housing the lower end of a tubular wick 16 and including an opening 17 in communication with a fuel chamber, the wick chamber containing valve means operative to open or close the opening 17 to allow or disallow respectively the flow of oil from the fuel chamber into the wick chamber through the opening 17 and the valve means being so constructed that if the heater is knocked over or tilted beyond a predetermined position the valve means closes the opening 17 to prevent further flow of oil therethrough from the fuel chamber into the wick chamber. The valve means comprises a vave member 24 connected by an inextensible connector 23 to a vertical cylindrical weight 21 tiltable about its lower circular edge on a support 20 so that when the heater is tilted beyond the predetermined position movement of the weight 21 pulls the connector 23 and causes valve member 24 to engage a valve seating 18 and close the opening 17. The wick chamber is in communication with a spill chamber above an annular flange 14 in the heater and oil flows into the spill chamber on tilting of the burner. On righting the burner the valve means reopens the opening 17 and oil flows back from the spill chamber into the wick chamber. The heater also comprises a device such as is described in Specification 1,218,355 operable to automatically lower the wick 16 if the heater is tilted. The heater also includes a one-way valve, Fig. 3 (not shown), which allows air to enter but does not allow oil to escape.
