Abstract

545,957. Vapour burners. LINDAHL, H. W. Sept. 30, 1941, No. 12619. [Classes 75 (i) and 75 (iii)] An annular water vessel formed by an outer shell 1 and an inner corrugated wall 2 and arranged in the cooling water system of an internal combustion engine is heated by a vapour burner 11 which is extinguished when the engine is running and which is ignited when the engine is shut down by the closure of a thermostatic contact device 14 arranged near the burner. The water vessel has perforated top and bottom covers 9, 7 fitted with safety nets 10, 8. The burner consists of a nozzle 16 discharging into a spherical burner head 15 having perforations in its upper portion for the emission of the combustion gases and in its lower portion for the adimission of air. The burner head contains an igniting filament 24 and a curved metal plate 20 from which hang steel wires 23. The fuel supply to the nozzle 16 is controlled by a valve 53 arranged in a tube 54 connected by a pipe 12 to a channelled plug 17 secured to the cover 7 below the nozzle 16. The tube 54 is surrounded by a casing 46 in which are arranged two coils 44, 47 and a normally closed switch 43 carrying an armature 60. The switch 43 is in the lead connecting a bimetallic element 40 of the contact device 14 to one battery terminal. When the engine is running the coil 47 is energized thereby drawing the valve 53 to shut off the fuel supply to the nozzle 16 and lifting the armature 60 to open the switch 43. When the engine is stopped the switch 43 closes and when the element 40 falls to a predetermined temperature it engages a spring 39 and completes the circuit to a heating coil 30 surrounding the plug 17 and to the filament 24. The element 40 as it becomes heated bends to engage a spring contact 41 and thereby completes a battery circuit through the coil 44 and raises the valve 53 to a position in which it is gripped by a spring clamp 56. Fuel then passes through the heated plug 17 to the nozzle 16 and the vapour produced is ignited by the filament 24. The element 40 then becomes further heated and a bow element upon it bends it out of contact with the spring 39 to break the circuit to the coils 30, 44 and filament 24. The spring 41 is also bent by a bow element upon it out of contact with the element 40. The valve 53 remains open until the coil 47 is energized by the starting of the engine when the temperature of the spring 40 falls. As the element 40 passes the unstable position of its bow element it also returns the spring 41 to its initial position by means of a hook 42. The nozzle 16 is fitted with a cleaning needle 35 which is reciprocated quickly on the extinction or ignition of the burner by the change of curvature of a bimetallic disc 36.
