Abstract

1369983 Change-speed gear control HAWKER SIDDELEY DYNAMICS Ltd 27 Sept 1971 [25 Sept 1970] 45771/70 Heading F2D An automatic change-speed gear control has gear change need indicated by a signal from a bi-directional digital counter 16 and the necessary speed matching to allow the change controlled by the frequency analogues of the speeds monitored as by a toothed wheel and magnetic pick-off on the gear-box input and output shafts N1, N2. An engine 12, Fig. 2, drives wheels 10 through a gear-box 13 connected to the engine through a clutch 13 and brake 19. The speed of the shaft N2, which at the time equals engine speed, is fed to frequency sensitive switches 14, 15 which by a signal f2 indicate the need for a gear change to a digital register 16, which can only effect the change when the speeds of the shafts N2, N3 as determined by the speed matching system 20, Fig. 3, are within the permitted limits of the speeds required for that change. In the speed matching system the frequencies f2, f3 are fed to a counter 22 the latter going also to a flip-flop 24 from which one output f3<SP>1</SP> is fed with f3 through an AND gate 25 to the counter 22 and the other output f3<SP>1</SP> with f3 is fed to an AND gate 26. The output of the counter 22 and the signal from the register 16 indicating the needed change are fed through AND and OR gates 23, 27 to an AND gate 28 also receiving the output of AND gate 26. If the signals at the AND gate 28 indicate the necessary speed match for the desired gear change a signal is fed to a bi-stable device 29 to engage the required dogs with disengagement of the clutch 13 if desired but if it is indicated that the shaft speed N2 is too high the engine is declutched and a brake applied by bi-stable 30 or if the speed is too low the shaft N2 is speeded up by overriding engine throttle through bi-stable 31. The speeding up may be produced by other means.
