Abstract
1369976 Inertia switch J F MARTINEZ 5 Feb 1973 [4 Feb 1972 25 Jan 1973] 5593/73 Heading H1N In an inertia switch for use in motor vehicles to isolate the battery and power system from earth in the event of a collision, a tumbling bob 9, Fig. 1, on a pair of parallel lever arms 6, carrying a movable contact plate 4 in normal engagement with fixed contact terminals 19, 21 moves under collision conditions to disengage the contact plate 4. The arms 6 are pivotally mounted on a pin 8 extending across opposite sides of a housing 1 containing the contacts. A tension coil spring 28 extending between pins 25, 26 to move over dead-centre and yieldingly retain the aims 6 in both operative positions. The plate 4 is connected by a flexible lead 3 to a terminal connection 2 for the earth side of the vehicle generator. Contact terminal 19 has a tag 20 for the earth side of the vehicle battery. Contact terminal 21 has a support bracket 27 bolted to the vehicle chassis to form the earth terminal. The bob 9 is manually movable as for resetting by means of a cable 11 passed through a hollow tube 10 in the bob and carrying stop 12, 13 engageable on opposite sides of the bob 9 when the cable is pulled or pushed.
