Abstract
1,036,296. Inertia switches. A.C.B. CORPORATION. May 24, 1965, No. 21868/65. Heading H2B. In an inertia switch for motor vehicles the battery connection to earth is through lead 12, terminal post 11, fixed contact 15, a bell crank lever comprising moving contact arm 16 and arm 19 pivoted about pivot 18, a catch 21, feet 26 on catch 21 to housing 10. Spring 17 urges arm 16 away from contact 15, but the contacts are retained in engagement by catch 21. The contacts are broken by the energization of solenoid 31 which lifts its armature 28 to trip catch 21. In the event of a collision, steel ball 37 runs up ramp 36 and moves metal plate 38 into contact with the flaps 38a round an opening in the bottom of metal cylinder 33 connected to the battery through lead 32 thus completing the circuit between the battery and the solenoid via cylinder 33, plate 38, spring 39, post 41, washer 44 and lead 45. In the event of the vehicle overturning, steel ball 46 completes the circuit from the battery to the solenoid via cylinder 33, ball 46, disc 47, post 41, washer 44 and lead 45. The catch can be reset by bar 51 the end of which 52 engages arm 19 if the bar 51 is pulled. Bar 51 can also be used to manually energize the solenoid by pushing arm 49 carrying contact 50 against cylinder 33, arm 49 being connected by lead 48 to the solenoid.
