Abstract

1369559 Magnesia-silica complexes MERCK & CO Inc 30 Oct 1972 [2 Nov 1971 29 June 1972] 49971/72 Heading C1J [Also in Divisions C7 and B2] An amorphous magnesia-silica complex contains from 0À001 to 2À0 wt. per cent alkali metal oxide and has a mole ratio of MgO to SiO2 from 1 : 25 to 14 : 1. This complex may be used in a coating composition for magnetic ferrous material, the composition comprising the complex, and magnesia and/or magnesium hydroxide. The coated material may then be annealed. The complex may be prepared by the precipitation reaction between a solution of a magnesium salt and a silicate solution. Acid may be added. The examples illustrate this preparation. The complex may also be employed in conjunction with Al2O3, Al(OH)3, CaO, Ca(OH)2, TiO2, MnO2, ZnO, BeO, Cr2O3, SiO2, ThO2, ZrO2 and FeO.
