Abstract

1369539 Dispensing closures M B STULL 12 May 1972 [12 May 1971] 22542/72 Heading B8T A dispensing type closure for screw-threaded and non-screw-threaded squeeze bottles comprises a moulded one-piece plastics cap retained on a bottle neck but movable by twisting or pulling between a depressed sealing position and a raised dispensing position, the cap having one or more dispensing orifice and a spout in its top wall not projecting above the remainder of the top wall, wherein an annular bead on the cap engages the container neck at all times to prevent leakage of liquid past the exterior of the neck. In Fig. 1, the cap 54 is retained on the bottle neck 42 by a shoulder 48 on the neck 42 which engages with a bead 66 on the cap 54, and which seals against surface 50 of the neck. The cap 54 is moved from the sealing to the dispensing position by the co-operating screw-threads 44 and 56 on rotation of the cap 54. In the dispensing position, an inner sealing bead 74 on the cap 54 is disengaged from a sealing surface 52 of the neck and allows liquid to be discharged through an arcuate dispensing orifice 62 to a spout 60. Excess liquid is returned by drainback recess 72. The cap 54 is tapered, and the spout 60 falls within the described cylinder, so that normal automatic capping machines may be utilized. In Figs. 3 and 4 (not shown), four discharge orifices are provided in the top wall of the cap around the periphery of a circular drainback recess which has an upwardly convex projection at its centre. In Figs. 5 and 6 (not shown), the cap has a single discharge orifice and its drain back recess is only a small sector in plan. An arrow is indented into the top wall of the cap to indicate the discharge orifice. The cap is not screwthreaded, i.e. it is of push-pull type. In Figs. 7, and 8 (not shown), the discharge openings 136 extend laterally of the cap, and the sealing plug 138 is supported by radial webs 140. In Figs. 9 and 10 (not shown), the cap is similar to that of Fig. 1, but is of push-pull type. The drainback recess is semicircular in plan. In Figs. 11 and 12 (not shown), the rim of the cap is cut away on each side of the spout of a push-pull cap. In Figs. 13 and 14 (not shown), the tubular plug 68 of Fig. 1, is reduced to an annular conical bend on the top wall of the cap. In Figs 16, and 15 (not shown), the screwthreads on the bottle neck and cap are of undercut wedge-section, which permit the bottle to be closed by forcing the cap downwards and giving a final twist to it. In Figs. 17 and 18 (not shown), the tubular plug 68 of Fig. 1, has an outwardly projecting annular bead which engages a groove in the inner wall of the bottle neck to seal and retain the screw cap.
