Abstract

1369411 Rotary wing aircraft VLM CORP 3 Jan 1973 [3 Jan 1972] 375/73 Heading B7W A rotary wing aircraft includes a ring (406), Fig. 4 (not shown), carrying a plurality of radially outwardly extending aerofoils 114, and encircling the body 102 of the aircraft, and gas pressure drive means, including a source of gas, for rotating the ring, the aircraft being capable of flight when the gas pressure is between 0À5 and 22 p.s.i.g. The aircraft includes a second, lower, ring (410) with aerofoils 118, and each ring has turbine blades 414 against which is directed air from nozzles 440 arranged on manifolds 432, 436 supplied by compressor 322, so that the two sets of aerofoils rotate in opposite directions. Compressed air is also supplied to manifolds 534, 538 and 542 which supply air bearings to support the ring (406) in track 106 and manifolds which similarly support ring (410) in track 110. The aerofoils 114 are pivotally mounted by devices 568 on spindles 562 supported in bearings 564, 566, and pitch is controlled by air bellows 586 acting on arm 580 rigid with the spindles 562. At last the vehicle is supported by an inflated member 342, but may be raised by pneumatic jacks 334, also supplied by the compressor.
