Abstract

1369202 Optical brightening of paper CIBAGEIGY AG 10 Aug 1971 [7 July 1970 (2)] 32842/70 and 32844/70 Heading DIP A process for brightening paper comprises contacting paper pulp with a solution comprising an optical brightener for cellulose and an organic carboxylic acid (1-13C) or a water soluble salt thereof, or with separate solutions containing the brightener, and the acid or its salt, respectively. The proportion of the acid or salt to brightener may be from 3-300% by weight based on the brightener. Preferably the acid is an aliphatic or aromatic acid having from 1 to 3 carboxyl groups and 1 or 2 hydroxy substituents per molecule. Alternatively the acid may contain an amino or chlorosubstituent. citric and tartaric acids are preferred. In one embodiment, paper is treated simultaneously or in sequence with (a) a solution of optical brightener for cellulose (b) a solution or emulsion of rosin size and (c) a solution of alum and a mono-, di- or tricarboxylic acid (1-13C) having 1 or 2 hydroxy groups or a solution containing alum and a salt of the acid. The acids may be present as their potassium sodium, ammonium or ethanolamine salts. The brightener may have the formula I: wherein X and Y may each be a mono- or di-substituted amino group, and M is an alkali metal. Specified mono-substituted amino groups include alkylamino (1-4C), hydroxyalkylamino (1-4C), alkoxyalkylamino (2-8C), cyclohexyl -amino, anilino, or anilino ring substituted with one or more alkali metal sulphonate groups. Specified di-substituted amino groups include dialkylamino, or dihydroxyalkylamino each having 1-4C in each chain, (di-(alkoxyalkylamino) with 2-8C in each chain, N-alkyl- N-hydroxyalkylamino with 1-4C in each chain, N-alkyl-N arylamino having 1-4C in the alkyl chain, pyrrolidino, piperidino or morpholino. The solvent may be water, an aliphatic alcohol or ketone, or dimethyl formamide. Further additives used in the process include Glauber's salt, clay starch, titanium dioxide, and size, mineral acid, alum, sodium aluminate, alkali metal hydroxides, ammonia and ethanolamine are mentioned as substances which may be used for pH adjustment.
