Abstract

1369097 Recording signals USS ENGS & CONSULTANTS Inc 19 June 1972 [6 July 1971] 28629/72 Heading B7N [Also in Division G1] An arrangement whereby the lateral movement of a railway line 2 or a curved portion of the track is measured as a wheel of a vehicle passes over it comprises a rod 24 carrying a core 22C of a transformer (Fig. 5) whose output is demodulated at 30 and applied to a chart recorder 40 or magnetic tape 38 or computer, the graphs or results obtained thereby (Figs. 6 and 7, not shown) being compared with those obtained from a vehicle in first class condition, in order to indicate (a) type of car, (b) condition of wheels or tracks (c) direction of travel, (d) speed of travel. The signals if fed to a computer may be compared with values stored in the computer. The passage of a wheel is detected by the interruption of light on to a photo-cell 28 whose amplified output is also fed to the recorder.
