Abstract
A magnetic tape record 29 of the actual state of the track, obtained from a recording vehicle, is used to control a correcting machine. The tape is synchronized with the travel of the machine by a sensor on a wheel 26 controlling the tape drive 28. Head 35 reads off alignment at intervals and the averager 44 generates a desired track alignment condition. Comparator 45 compares alignment at a point B, derived from tape B' by head 36, with desired alignment and feeds error signal to control hydraulic ram 48 for lateral adjustment of track. The signal from averager 44 representing track curvature is combined with speed input 51 to generate desired cross level for comparison with signal from head 37. The resulting error signal then controls lifting ram 54 or 55. Processing of the original record to obtain desired track condition or to obtain a record of error signals may be carried out in advance to produce a tape for control of the correcting machine.
