1368276 Thiophene carboxylic acid derivatives SANDOZ Ltd 27 Oct 1971 [30 Oct 1970 6 July 1971] 49879/71 Heading C2C Novel compounds I in which R 1 is H or 1-4 C alkyl; R 2 is H, Cl, or 1-3 C alkyl or alkoxy; and R 3 is H, Cl, Br, or 1-3 C alkyl or alkoxy or, if R 2 is H, R 3 may also be F or CF 3 are prepared by oxidation of a compound II wherein R<SP>I</SP> 1 is 1-4 C alkyl, optionally followed by hydrolysis. The compounds II may be prepared by reaction of a compound VI with N-bromosuccinimide, to give a compound V reaction of compound V with R<SP>I</SP> 1 OOCCH 2 CH 2 SH to give a compound III and cyclization of III. Pharmaceutical compositions useful as antiphlogistics comprise a compound I together with a suitable diluent or carrier and are administered orally or parenterally.
