Abstract

1368252 Railway vehicle undercarriages WEGMANN & CO 26 Aug 1971 [27 Aug 1970] 40143/71 Heading B7L A railway vehicle comprises a body 3, Figs. 1 and 2, mounted on a bogie 1 by suspension means including a control linkage consisting of two longitudinal radius rods 4a, 4b each having a spherical joint at each end, one end of each rod being connected to the bogie via a damping coupling at 10, and the other end of each rod being attached to a respective one of two cranks 5a, (5b), which are fast on respective ends of a transverse shaft 7 which is in turn connected to the body 3, said cranks and shaft forming parts of the control linkage. The suspension means are such that on a straight section of railway track the bogie can rotate about its vertical axis only by overcoming an opposing resistance offered by the damping coupling, without at the same time free movement being prevented between the bogie 1 and the vehicle body 3 in the fore and aft, lateral and vertical directions, whereas upon entering a curve the resistance of the damping coupling is overcome. As shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the damping coupling is a multiple disc friction coupling in which friction discs beneath plate 10 are held together by a spring 12 but are separated when rollers 13 ride up inclined parts of a track surface 14 to decompress the discs. Alternatively, as in Figs. 15 and 17, the transverse shaft may be connected to the bogie and the damping coupling interposed between the control linkage and the vehicle body. In Fig. 15, the coupling comprises a roller 71 which engages a depression 73a of a track surface 73 provided on a bolster 70. Fig. 17 shows a fixed centre bogie in which a central pivot pin 91 connects the bogie to the body and is provided with a multiple disc friction coupling 96a, 96b within a bearing member 90, from which longitudinal forces are transmitted to the bogie by a link bolt 97 attached to the bogie at 98 via springs 99. Sprung axle guide means, Figs. 10 and 11 (not shown) may be arranged between the bogie and roller axle bearing housings, comprising spring elements which are arranged at approximately the level of the wheel axles and which include rubber chevrons.
